Project Description:
Pier 27 is located on the eastern shoreline of the city of San Francisco and is used by tug boats, a Maritime Administration ship, and for as-needed lay berthing. SAIC/ADH assisted the Port of San Francisco by performing maintenance dredging to a permitted depth of -35 feet mean lower low water (MLLW), +2 feet overdepth.
Scope of Services:
The project team provided as-needed consultation services to SF DPW for sediment characterization monitoring programs to support maintenance dredging and new construction dredging along the City’s Bay front, inland lakes and reservoirs.
Responsibilities included the following:
- Review and comment on existing reports
- Provide expert commentary
- Provide environmental regulatory plans and documentation
- Prepare sampling and analysis plans in accordance with applicable Federal, State, Regional, and local statutes, regulations and ordinances, planning and permitting of dredging and disposal activities
- Perform collection, analyses, and evaluation of resultant data pertaining to sediments, soils, water quality in marine, freshwater, land, and wetland environments and ecosystems.
ADH Responsibilities:
ADH participated in and/or was responsible for the following:
- Sediment vibracore sampling:
- Ensured accurate positioning at sample locations, accurate target core lengths relative to actual mudline elevations, and ship-board duties for proper sample handling procedures
- Generation of lithologic coring logs
- Generation of samples to be analyzed for grain size and sediment chemistry analyses, and toxicity testing
- Pipe dredge sampling at Alcatraz Island and San Pablo Bay reference sites.
